Nando’s Pakenham
Inspired by African art, fashion & textiles
Natural materials such as terracotta brick work, lime plaster, rattan and aged brass bring warmth to the design, inspired by abstract patterns painted by African women onto clay houses using natural pigments from plants and clay. Repetition and scale are hallmarks of the Nando’s aesthetic, incorporated here in the way of large detailed screens made of rattan, which offer privacy and ambience whilst referencing patterns commonly used in African textiles. Lighting applications, such as clustered pendants and a sequence of feature wall lights also play on the idea of repetition.
The patterned scratch render applied to walls, brings dimension, fluidity and texture to the space and a sense of refinement is brought to the design through the tonality of the carefully considered material palette. The free-standing earth coloured concrete hand wash basin exemplifies this and provides a key moment in the design, accompanied by a rendered condiments unit and brass detailing which are set against a terracotta brick wall. Cork and woven furniture contribute to the natural, earthy aesthetic and reference the artisanal and organic nature of African art and design.
